Canadian Waistline Watch - Getting Bigger, But Not So Fast

Canadians are getting heavier , but a new study by Statistics Canada has a note of cheer , they are not gaining weight at the same pace as they did earlier. //Adults between 18-64 were monitored for weight gain every two years from 1996 to 2005 . The data showed that they have put on weight steadily , but during the last two years , the amount of weight gain has decreased.

This welcome news is thought to be due to the fact that only 44% of men gained weight during the last two year interval as against 50% who had grown heavier previously. Also , many women lost a lot of weight . The only people who gained more were men between 18-33. According to Dr.David Lau Of Obesity Canada, this is cause for concern as it means weight gain at a younger age.

Over the period of the study, men gained an average of 4 kgs. while women put on around 3.4 kgs. on average. Though the reduced rate is not significantly high, it bodes well for the future, in terms of avoiding obesity related illnesses.

Stephen Samis of Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance of Canada said obesity was a major health concern in Canada and that 60% of Canadians were obese. He blamed sedentary jobs and fast food for the problem.

The mantra for weight loss , as fitness experts keep advising, is - eat healthy balanced meals , reduce portion size , avoid crash dieting, and exercise regularly, including strength training to improve muscle tone.
