Canada Witness Delay in Flu Vaccination Programs

The Public Works and Government Services Canada said that there would be a delay in the initiation of flu vaccination programs this year.//

The vaccine instead of being launched in the beginning of October would be done so in the month of November. Dr. Sheela Basrur, Ontario's chief medical officer said that all the Canadians will be vaccinated by the beginning of the flu season. Public Works buys vaccine in bulk for all publicly funded programs, purchasing from GlaxoSmithKline and Sanofi Pasteur Canada. Solvay Pharma Inc., provides vaccine to the private market, such as workplace clinics whose costs are covered by companies.

These flu shots are mainly against the three main flu strains that WHO experts believe will circulate during the winter period such as the H1N1 and an H3N2 strains. The main reason for the delay is that the original seed strain for one of the viruses failed to grow and the replacement seed also has disappointing results.
