Campaigners and Health Officials Fight Against Polio in Namibia

In Namibia people are affected by polio and as of now 15 people have died. Hence the government plans to conduct a three-day mass vaccination campaign to fight polio. // This campaign would cost 395 million Namibian dollars, said Kalumbi Shangula, permanent secretary in the health ministry. On the whole about 96 people have been affected by the outbreak in the southern African country. Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba, asked the people to actively participate in the vaccination program. The first case of polio was detected on May 6 and the government was very keen on eradicating polio and decided to conduct vaccination campaigns.

There are long queues were seen in some parts of the capital Windhoek. Health Minister Richard Kamwi said that all the work is going on in full swing and about 6 400 officials and volunteers had been deployed for the campaign. Every village is covered by mobile teams which are specially allotted 800 vehicles. But minor problems are witnessed said the health ministry official Ithindi Shipanga due to the delay caused by some of the volunteers. Others did not have transport and in few places the centres ran out of vaccines. At the small town of Usakos, about 200 kilometers west of Windhoek, residents said the campaign was going smoothly.
