It’s considered till now that after delivery depressions, that had plagued new mothers all over the world, // was mostly due to the trauma of the delivery. As a result of this belief, many pregnant women opted for a planned caesarian birth to avoid the depression. A new study that comes in the recent issue of British Medical Journal says that this may not be the case.

According to Deirdre Murphy of Dundee University, who had led the team of researchers in the study, says that no significant relationship exists between type of delivery and setting of after birth depression in 14000 cases they had studied. The study also found out those cases where patients showed higher tendencies of having depressive feelings after delivery, they were being routinely advised by their doctors to go for caesarian births. When assessed for signs of post delivery depressions in new mothers till eight weeks after delivery, the results did not show any difference between types of delivery.

Postnatal depression is often related to the hormonal changes that happen during the process of labor, with changing levels of estrogen, progesterone etc., that stabilize after the delivery.
