CA-MRSA, a Tough Bug to Trap

Super bug or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or CA-MRSA was thought to emerge predominantly// from the hospitals, but if current statistics are anything to go by, the bug appears to have patronized day care centers, and play grounds, which has resulted in an upsurge of infection in the US, threatening to spill over into Canada as well.

Lately infections have been on the rise amongst baseball players, professional football players and children in day care. The infection could manifest as a huge boil which could trigger hemorrhagic pneumonia or flesh-eating disease, albeit rarely.

The organism is an "old foe with new fangs: a pathogen combining virulence, resistance and an ability to disseminate at large," Dr. John Conly, an infectious disease specialist and professor of medicine at the University of Calgary said.

Healthcare workers in Canada have been advised to adopt preventive measures. Hygiene tips have been enabled in day care centers. Washing hands using alcohol gels, covering the mouth during coughs have been recommended. Bath after a game has been advised to athletes and players which include maintenance and cleaning of the bathrooms regularly. Pets could be a storehouse of infections- so veterinarians and owners should keep this in mind while handling pets.
