President Bush has heavily endorsed the new Medicare prescription drug benefit and has asked senior citizens in the Midwest to sign up before the May 15 deadline. //

"It doesn't cost a dime to look and you're going to save money,'' said Bush. "Seniors are saving about half on their prescription drug charges already. If you're a poor senior, the government is going to pay over 95 percent. I'm just telling you it's a good deal." Around a 1,000 enrollment seminars are being held across the country in order to drum up support for the program. Mark McClellan, Bush's chief Medicare official who is touring along with Bush said that 29 million seniors had so far signed up for the program. He added that this number included the 20 million who were automatically enrolled due to their participation in a previous drug program. However Democrats are opposing the program and are claiming that it will cost nearly double of what has been projected. "As seniors around the country know, a drug program written by the special interests and for the special interests is fundamentally flawed,'' said Sen. Edward Kennedy. ``It's the wrong prescription for Medicare, and seniors deserve better.''
