Burning Mouth Syndrome Is Treatable

“Burning mouth syndrome” is the name given to a condition characterized by a “thick” tongue that impedes speech and burning gums. Although it remains one of the toughest // conditions for a dentist to tackle, it is indeed treatable. The condition affects women more than men and is pronounced as a woman goes through menopause.

It may also be seen in patients with type 2 diabetes and individuals taking heart medications or some antibiotics. “We're not exactly certain what causes burning mouth syndrome, but we have seen some correlation between this disorder, yeast infections and allergies to different foods or products in the mouth,” said Jackie Plemons, D.D.S., M.S., associate professor of periodontics and assistant director of the Stomatology Center at the Baylor College of Dentistry-Texas A&M Health Science Center. Plemons added that minor changes in diet and fungal infections if present resolves the condition, otherwise antidepressants or other medications could also be usd.
