A new survey reveals that Bupropion is an effective treatment for neuropathic pain (nerve pain). Neuropathic pain or nerve pain is commonly treated with tricyclic antidepressants(TCAs) But these drugs have side effects and don't always relieve the burning, stabbing and shooting sensations associated with nerve pain.

Now researchers at the University of Texas have revealed that bupropion SR (sustained release) is effective against nerve pain in a trail of 30 patients. Half took bupropion for six weeks, while the rest took a placebo. // After this time, they swopped treatments for the next six weeks. Seventy three per cent of the bupropion patients reported their pain was improved or even much improved while 90 per cent of those taking the placebo found their pain the same, or worse.

What's especially interesting is that the patients were chosen because they did not suffer from depression. It's often been said that the TCAs work by relieving depression. Bupropion being an antidepressant works differently in this study by relieving the pain directly and can clearly help patients who are not depressed.
