British Tourist In Hong Kong Has Mad Cow Disease

A British tourist in Hong Kong is suspected of having the human variety of mad cow disease. The 23-year-old man has not been named and was admitted to a Hog Kong hospital// after he began behaving oddly. Hospital Authority in Hong Kong said the man came to the country on April 4 and was admitted in hospital on April 6.

The man is of Chinese origin and underwent intestinal surgery earlier. Hong Kong health department spokesperson Lee Ying-ming said the man was from Britain. "This case is not a local one," Lee added. "We believe whatever he has, he caught it overseas."

Local tests have not confirmed that he is suffering from mad cow disease. Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) is the human form of mad cow disease seen in cattle.

The disease is a nerve degenerative one and is almost always fatal.
