According to a study it was found that free fertility treatment would result in long term benefits to the economy and society //. A child born by IVF is more advantageous and would repay the cost quickly than a child conceived naturally. The IVF baby is estimated to begin the repaying process after two years. Hence the study concludes that the NHS should provide free fertility treatment. This would have a positive impact on stimulating the birth rate and thereby combating the problems of an ageing population.

By doing so the government is not only helping the family but also the society. Professor William Ledger, head of the infertility unit at Sheffield University said that money invested in IVF treatment is never a waste but on the other hand the government can start earning money back quickly from tax and other benefits. The study results were released at the European Society of Human Reproduction in Prague. On an average the test tube conception costs about ￡13,000.

The Professor said that a man who was born naturally would pay back about ￡160,000 net to the state when compared with ￡147,000 net that would be paid back by a man born as a result of state-funded IVF. The figures show that the break-even point for a naturally conceived man is 29 and for a man conceived through IVF is 31. As of now only one cycle of IVF treatment is being provided with the help of some trust and welfare organization but the Government has promised to provide at least three cycles of fertility treatment in the NHS.
