According to the annual report of UK’S National Institute of Mental Health, not only is the rates of suicides lowest ever, there are also definite steps // being taken to ensure that suicide attempts in the nation are reduced by 20 percent, within the next three years.

At the same time there are concerns by the organization for those patients registered with them, who are not compliant with their mode of treatment. Another problem area identified is of those patients who take their own lives in such institutions.

One line of treatment proposed is the Community Supervised Treatment. Moves are also proposed to push for more freedom in legislative issues regarding mental health.

Professor Loius Appleby, current national director of the National Institute of Mental Health though agreeing that he was pleased by improvement shown, cautioned that areas of clinical practice needed to be strengthened if suicides in mental healthcare were to be prevented.

“We are seeing encouraging progress towards the target to reduce suicide by 20 per cent by 2010, but it is important that we maintain the momentum. "Two important areas are the management of risk in patients discharged from hospital, and in patients who are non-compliant with their treatment”, he opined.
