Breastfeeding: To Be Or Not To Be?

A report in The New York Times says that breastfeeding in the US depends on what class mothers belong to. Apparently mothers from professional backgrounds// are allowed to breastfeed their babies, while poor mothers are frowned upon.

"I feel like I had to choose between feeding my baby the best food and earning a living," said Jennifer Munoz, a former cashier at Resorts Atlantic City Casino. She said she had to take irregular breaks behind a fridge or the toilet in order to dump her milk.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that seventy-three percent of mothers now breast-feed their newborns. Doctors believe breast milk offers babies protection and reduces the rate of infection, the risk of allergies, obesity, and chronic disease later in life.
