Breast Cancer Examinations To Be Reviewed In Irish Hospitals

It has now been announced that the British Government would be conducting a separate enquiry into the alleged mis-practices of a consultant radiologist in Ireland. //

These clinical decisions by the Irish doctor have come under the scanner and have necessitated the recall of close to 7,000 women to reassess their breast cancer examinations.

The enquiry team will be headed by Dr Robin Wilson, a Nottingham-based expert, whose team will initially review 1,900 cases at Belfast’s City Hospital and 5,000 at Antrim Area Hospital. “What I have to emphasize to you is the speed of this process, in my experience, is unprecedented.

I have been quite impressed by the organization here in Northern Ireland in that we have managed to review the vast majority of the assessment cases within a week,” said Dr Wilson, who is the director of Breast Screening Quality Assurance. He added that his detailed report would be submitted to the Department of Health by the end of the year.
