Bread enriched with lupin may help stave off calories

A novel study from down under has indicated the benefits of the lupin plant//, whose seeds could instill a feeling of satisfaction, ultimately resulting in reduced calorie intake. The researchers have found that adding lupin kernel flour to various foods may help in controlling appetite. Lupin is a serious contender with soya bean for its increasing protein content.

The investigators conducted a study with 16 subjects who were given either white bread or lupin enriched bread in different combinations. It was observed that people who consumed LKF fortified bread for breakfast were satisfied with lesser calories for lunch, almost one-third less. The participants were also tested for the presence of ghrelin , a hormone that functions like an appetite gauge . The levels of ghrelin levels were significantly reduced when the subjects consumed lupin bread, as they did not feel hungry for a long after the meal.

"These results suggest that protein and fiber enrichment of bread with lupin kernel flour has the potential to influence appetite and reduce energy intake, at least in the short term," Dr. Ya P. Lee of the University of Western Australia in Perth and colleagues write in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
