Brain fever takes 185 lives

With another child’s death due to Japanese encephalitis, the death toll since April this year has reached 185 in Gorakhpur district.//

According to the Additional Director (Health) Umakant Prasad, 15 new cases of brain affecting illness have been reported from several parts of the district since Wednesday evening.

Mr. Prasad said that 74 people were undergoing treatment at the BRD Medical College Hospital in Gorakhpur. He informed that totally1106 people were severely affected by this disease in that area since April 1, of which 734 were treated and discharged from the hospital.

For identification of the strain of the virus causing brain fever, 310 samples of blood serum and cerebrospinal fluid have been sent to the National Institute of Virology. A species of Culex mosquito spreads Japanese encephalitis.
