A 12-year old boy who tested HIV positive was tied to his bedpost at the Meerut Medical College.The boy had been in juvenile jail in Meerut since April after committing a robbery. He tested HIV positive only last week.//

But the matters only worsened at the Medical College, which proved to be hopelessly inadequate to deal with his case.

The boy arrived at the College ten days ago when a blood test confirmed he was HIV positive. He was brought in from juvenile jail only when his condition was very critical.

The child had been kept in a ward with other highly infectious patients. When hospital authorities were questioned as to why the boy was tied to the bed by media, they admitted they were not equipped to handle AIDS patients.

Manvender Singh, ADM, Meerut said, "There are no adequate facilities in Meerut so we suggested that he be transferred to another hospital. He is going to be admitted at AIIMS where they can take good care of him."

The boy has now been shifted to AIIMS in New Delhi where he has also been diagnosed with tuberculosis of the brain.

The Meerut administration has come down heavily on the juvenile jail following their discovery that and discovered that no weekly health check ups have been conducted for the last two months.

Manvender added, "On June 30 they did inform the CMO that no doctor has been coming in. But they should have informed the DPO or me."

The trauma of the last few months has culminated with the boy being shunted from a juvenile jail in Meerut to a hospital in the city and now finally to an isolation ward in AIIMS.
