Blood Pressure On The Rise

A new study shows the number of Americans living with high blood pressure has increased 30 percent over the last 10 years. High blood pressure is defined // as having blood pressure of 140/90 millimeters of mercury or higher. Patients who are told by their doctors at least twice that their blood pressure is elevated are also considered to have high blood pressure.

However researchers say the study did not examine the reasons for the increase in high blood pressure cases, but researchers cited the aging population along with the growing number of overweight Americans as potential factors. Old age, excess weight, and lack of physical activity all increase the risk of having high blood pressure.

Researchers conclude saying that getting regular physical activity, controlling weight and eating a nutritious diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables and moderate amounts of salt, can reduce a person’s chances of developing high blood pressure.
