Blindness cases in China on the rise

The blindness prevention office of the Ministry of Health released a data on Sunday, the International Day of the Blind, according to which//, around 45,000 new cases of eyesight loss are reported every year in China.

"By July, China has reported 12 million people handicapped with eye problems, including about 5 million blind people, " said Professor Wang Lihua, vice director with the blindness prevention office in East China's Shandong Province.

According to him, pearl eye, glaucoma and cornea disease are mainly responsible for blindness. The ultraviolet rays damage the lens in the eye causing pearl eye. "People should reduce outdoor activities under the burning sun or wear sunglasses," he said.

Regular eye-check-ups for diabetics, developing reading and writing with correct postures in children and maintenance of adequate distance from televisions and computer screens are some of the suggestions given by Wang.

In the mean time, experts in southwest China's Sichuan Province have instructed to improve awareness to help the blind. "Please stay away from the special lane for blind pedestrians and volunteer them a hand when it is necessary," said Yang Zhixiao, an official with the association of the disabled in Chengdu, Sichuan's capital city.
