Blazing Statistics: Burn Victims in USA Are Old and Poor

The HHS' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has reported that more than $726 million , roughly 45% of the changes to treat burn victims is billed to Medicare or Medicaid, government programs intended for the senior// citizens and the under privileged.

According to statistics, the average charge is $59,600 for Medicare patients and $47,400 for Medicaid patients; the average charge for burn victims with private insurance is $41,400; and for uninsured burn victims, the average charge is $34,900.

1. Private insurers are billed for 29% of 33,000 hospitalizations of burn victims with 11 percent charges to uninsured burn victims.

2. Nearly 3.7 percent of all burn victims succumb to the burns, while in the hospital, with death rate climbing to 12% among the 65 or more age group.

3. Men, more prone to burn accidents, as two of every three hospitalized burn victims are men.

The statistics reported are for 2003, which excludes Physician’s fees.
