Bird Flu Suspected in Japan

At a poultry farm in south western Japan in Kiyotake, around 750 chickens have died suggesting an outbreak of bird flu here.//

This has been reported to the agricultural ministry and tests have been carried out immediately. Results should be out latest by Friday evening. If bird flu is confirmed, then it would commence the destroying of the remaining birds.

The farm in question has around 12000 chickens. Adequate preventive measures have been taken and the farm has been kept under quarantine. In Japan, till date there is a single case of a human getting affected by bird flu but there are no human casualties there.

The potent virus that is responsible for bird flu viz. H5N1 has created havoc among the poultry community in Asia since 2003. Economy also suffered a great deal due to this disease.

Medical fraternity fears the chances of H5N1 virus getting mutated which would prove highly lethal for human population.
