Bird Flu In Eastern Cambodian Districts

An additional two districts in Cambodia have now been affected by bird flu killing thousands of ducks. Health officials suggested// that the outbreaks happened after a man smuggled infected ducks in from Vietnam.

Ku Chanthan, a veterinary official in the province was quoted as telling Reuters that two people were admitted to the hospital on suspicion of having contracted the virus. Last week in Prey Veng province around 1,300 ducks died from bird flu. Ku added that the owner of the ducks smuggled the surviving birds from Kampong Cham and caused an outbreak, that killed nearly 2,000 ducks.

"The result of tests on duck samples taken from the two districts has shown that the virus is H5N1," said senior agriculture official Yim Voeunthan.

According to the World Health Organisation, the bird flu virus has killed nearly 140 people around the world.
