Bird-Flu: A Child and Two Adults, Quarantined At Jalgaon

A child, just five years old and two adults were placed under quarantine in different Jalgaon hospitals, following incidents of bird-flu// , in this part of Maharashtra.

Tina Nanavade from Rawer taluka, all of five, complained of sore throat and fever and was admitted to Nhavi Hospital on Sunday afternoon. Tami flu is being administered to her, more as a precaution against a possible bird-flu.

Sarla More from Jamner, a 40 year old had touched dead poultry, and now has fever. She has also been put on Tami flu, and has been admitted to Jalgaon Civil Hospital. Incidentally, Jamner was not in the record of affected villages.

After an egg broke on a 55-year-old doctor’s palm, the doc got himself admitted to the same facility, though he did not hail from any of the bird-flu affected areas. 'He has swelling in his foot and face as an allergic reaction to Tami flu—a drug that is known to have severe reactions,' said a doctor attending to him.

Stringent surveillance has started in all the four villages that had reported incidences of bird flu. The Animal Husbandry department had supervised the culling operations where 91,161 birds, have been put to death. 'Every house within the three-km radius (whether they had poultry or not) is being disinfected with formalin,' said animal husbandry commissioner Bijay Kumar.

Also 100 fresh poultry samples from 15 tehsils that are not in the four bird flu-hit zones will go to the High Security Animal Diseases Laboratory at Bhopal for testing. The 300 cullers, who had effected the culling operations, have been isolated for a week, as per WHO rules. After a week, their blood samples will be sent o NIV and upon clearance, they can head back to their places.
