A study conducted and headed by Veronique Roger, M.D., M.P.H., at the Mayo Cardiologist Clinic showed that following heart attack there is a high risk of these patients suffering from stroke//.
The results were reported that the stroke risk was 44 times more during the 30 day period after the attack in these patients when compared to the normal person.
The study is very important because with today’s medical facilities Heart attacks are easily cured by the doctors and the patients also survive it. But one of the major problems after the heart attack is the risk of stroke. As so many people today survive heart attacks they are all at the risk of developing a stroke.
The study included 2,160 patients from 1979-98 who previously had a heart attack and received treatment at the Mayo clinic. The patients were studied for six years whether they survived the heart attack or developed a stroke.
The risk of developing a stroke following a heart attack is not only high in the first thirty days but the risk rates were the same till three years and it has not decreased in the past twenty years (1979-98).
Factors such as old age, diabetes, previous history of stroke all results in increased risk of stroke after a heart attack. The stroke remained the major cause of death in patients after surviving a heart attack.
The various measures to prevent heart attack is to exercise daily, stop smoking and drinking and eat healthy food products. But once you have had a heart attack then apart from these measures mentioned above medications (beta blockers, aspirin) are also to be taken which will reduce cholesterol and improve the health.
But the measures that are to be taken to prevent stroke after an attack is not yet analyzed and hence research has to be done in this direction thereby saving many lives can be saved thereby preventing deaths due to strokes.
