Bengal Teenager to Participate in World Oncology Camp

A Bengali teenager, who won his battle with cancer, is all set to fly to United States to share the story of his recovery from the deadly ailment.

Bidurin Chakraborty, a class 12 student of Boy's High School in Siliguri, about 600 km from the state capital, is completely cured after three years of treatment against cancer with the financial support of cricketer Sourav Ganguly and his teammates.

Now he is going to participate in this year's World Oncology Summer Camp in Michigan to tell others how he fought a tough battle against cancer and how things have changed in his life.

Nineteen different countries will participate in the World Oncology Summer Camp this year and four people from India, including Bidurin, will represent the subcontinent.

Bidurin was diagnosed with cancer in 1998 when he was a class five student but his father Tiyas Chakraborty was not able to afford the expensive treatment.

Things looked up when West Bengal Urban Development Minister Ashok Bhattacharya requested Sourav Ganguly to provide financial support to the stricken boy.

Local reports said Sourav and his other teammates sold their kits in an open auction and raised Rs.500,000 for Bidurin's medical treatment.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) arranges the World Oncology Summer Camp in the US every year. Mainly young people, who once suffered from deadly cancer but later recovered with proper treatment, participate in the camp and narrate their experience.

This cancer camp is primarily targeted to enhance the mental strength amongst cancer patients in the world.
