Beauty contest with a difference

Russia will hold a beauty contest in which only HIV positive girls will participate

A beauty contest with a difference will be held in Russia on 1 December 2005, which is the World AIDS Day, in which only HIV positive girls will participate.// The contest has been named ‘Miss Positive-2005’. The object of the contest is to change the attitude of the public with regard to the scourge, and also help HIV infected people lead a normal life. HIV/AIDS events will also be organized across the country on the day.

The contest will also serve to create greater awareness with regard to the disease among the population, particularly women, like in the case of India, it is perceived that educating a woman is equivalent to educating a whole family.

Russia is reported to have a HIV infected population of approximately 1 million people, with over 100 new cases being reported across the country every day. As many as 80% of the country’s HIV infected population is aged below 30 years. About 70% of this HIV population was infected due to drugs usage.

The Asian Continent is witnessing an increase in the number of HIV cases, with the disease touching epidemic proportions in Indonesia. HIV is also believed to be rampant in the Henan Province of China, with the locals accusing the Chinese Government of engaging in a cover up operation with the object of hiding the reality in the country from the rest of the world.
