Although Offensive breath is a common malady that many suffer from, it often breeds discomfort and contempt in a social scenario. In an all out effort to overcome it those struggling with this malady often for go some food stuffs, which are notably notorious in causing bad breath//. In the absence of any clear-cut treatment for Halitosis, to cover it up, chewing gums, and mouth rinses are usually resorted to.

Statistics reveal that over 40 million Americans suffer from Halitosis.

According to a study in the September/October issue of General Dentistry, the Academy of General Dentistry's (AGD) clinical, peer-reviewed journal regarding Halitosis(disagreeable odor of exhaled air), the most common reason for bad breath usually is the bacteria laden mucus which drips from the closely situated posterior nasal opening into the distal part of the oral cavity generally associated with sinusitis.

The study also reviewed material to compare what are the other longer lasting and effective options to curb bad breath. The review led them to understand that using 'tongue scrapers' definitely has an edge over merely brushing the surface of the tongue using tooth brushes in keeping bad breath (specifically malodor or bad odors originating in the mouth) in check although at times only for a short while.

Data collected also shows that tongue cleaners demonstrate greater efficiency in removing the malodor causing Volatile Sculpture Compounds, which form on the tongue when oral bacteria interact with aminoacids (functional unit of proteins).
