Baby Boomers: Shape up or get shipped out!

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada has issued a wake up call to obese baby boomers, who could be throwing a spanner in the advancement of heart health. //

Dr. Beth Abramson, foundation spokesperson and cardiologist told CTV."It was shocking to find that the rates of obesity in baby boomers have soared by nearly 60 per cent and a staggering 52 per cent are inactive."

Abramson feels that baby boomers, the group between 45 and 60, are not as fit as the seniors of today.

During a survey initiated amongst baby boomers and senior citizens, findings showed that nearly 30% of Baby boomers were obese as against 24% of seniors. Nearly 52% of the baby boomers led absolute inactive lives with zilch fitness endeavors.

Abramson attributes this lethargy and lackadaisical approach, to the life of affluence- cars and modern technology at their disposal, and the promise of access to good health care.

According to the study, number of Canadians in the age group of 60s will go up by 50 per cent in the next decade. The alarming note being that nearly 25% of Medical Care providers Doctors are baby boomers themselves, portending a heart health crisis. The only silver lining being that out only 21% of baby boomers smoke against 29%,ten years back
