BMA Criticises Government Bid to Claw Back Doctors' Pay

The BMA today criticises a recommendation from the Departments of Health in Great Britain that NHS staff should receive below-inflation pay rises//. In its evidence to the independent Doctors and Dentists Review Body, published today, the government argues for a general uplift to doctors’ pay of 1.5%.

In its own evidence to the Review Body, published yesterday, the BMA said doctors should be awarded pay rises of at least 4% in order to recruit, retain and motivate them.

BMA Chairman, Mr James Johnson, says:

"The Departments of Health proposal for a pay uplift of only 1.5% is an attempt to claw back the pay increases resulting from the contracts introduced for consultants and GPs in the last few years. We don't negotiate contracts in good faith for them to be whittled away over the succeeding years. Doctors are working intensively and under pressure to cut waiting times and deliver high quality services. They deserve a pay rise that reflects their continuing hard work, not one that erodes the value of contracts the government has agreed to."
