BHU Hospital Doctors Continue Hunger Strike

The resident and junior doctors of Sir Sunderlal hospital in the Banaras Hindu University campus continued their relay hunger strike// for the second consecutive day today to protest against the proposed 27 per cent quota for the backward castes in the higher education institutions.

Apart from the relay hunger strike, the agitating doctors formed human chain outside the university campus and carried out mass mobilisation campaign on the issue at the Assi Ghat on the bank of river Ganga, a Resident Doctors Association office bearer Shashi Kumar Mishra said.

The protesting medicos also launched a signature campaign against the proposed reservation which would be handed over to the Prime Minister and the President seeking reconsideration of the quota in the higher education institutions, he said.

The representatives of the junior medicos also held a meeting to discuss various aspects of the proposed reservation and sought support of the like minded organisations to their demand, Mishra said.

Meanwhile, the medical facilities at Sir Sunderlal hospital remained paralysed as the ongoing indefinite strike by the resident and junion doctors entered the sixth day causing inconvenience to the patients coming here from remote and rural areas.

The authorities have cancelled the leave of all senior doctors and asked them to resume duties to tide over the shortage of doctors at the hospital, sources said adding the medical and health facilities in the premier hospital was running normally.
