Awareness About Condoms Among Pakistani Punjabis is Very Low

Only four percent of people in Pakistan's Punjab province know about the use of condoms in the prevention of sexually-transmitted diseases (STD) and Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Sydrome (AIDS).

The survey conducted by Behaviour Change Communication Services also found that people in the province were least aware of the AIDS and the ways one could get infected by the HIV.

While, 26 percent of the people knew that unsafe sex could cause the disease, 23 percent were aware that use of contaminated needles could spread HIV/AIDS and 60 percent of the people knew that receiving blood of an affected person could cause the disease.

Less than one percent of the respondents knew that unborn children could catch HIV/AIDS from the infected mother, and that the virus by the wounds of a HIV positive person could infect one.

Quoting Akbar Babar, Team Leader of the survey, the Daily Times reported that contrary to the general perception, 75 percents of the respondents thought that extra marital sex was prevalent in society, and 62 percent of had never heard about STDs.
