AMA President, Dr Mukesh Haikerwal, today welcomed the results of the Roy Morgan Image of Professions Survey, which showed yet again that Australians// rate their health professionals as the most honest and ethical.

The top three professions, in order, were nurses (91 per cent, up 2 per cent), pharmacists (85 per cent, up 1 per cent), and doctors (81 per cent, up 2 per cent).

Dr Haikerwal said the survey shows that Australians place a lot of faith and trust in the people who look after their health.

“Doctors place great importance on ethics and honesty, so it is pleasing that patients are recognizing these qualities in their family doctors,” Dr Haikerwal said.

“When it comes to their health, people want to be confident they are in safe hands and the response to this survey is clear evidence that Australians feel safe and secure with the care they are receiving at all stages of the health system.

“All the health professions should be proud of their public standing – they work hard at it.

“I pay special tribute to our hardworking AMA members and all doctors for upholding the strong image of our proud profession.”

Dr Haikerwal said an interesting feature of the survey was the low standing of politicians in the ethics and honesty stakes, with Federal politicians rating just 16 per cent.

“In this election year, the survey sends a strong message to politicians that they will have to start taking more advice from health professionals.

“We’re from the AMA and we’re here to help,” Dr Haikerwal said.
