Organ donation saves hundreds of lives ever year. The need the organ, kidney is on the rise and is the most sought after organ // .

Of all the organ transplantations done, kidney transplantation accounts for 64%. But the bad news is that there is a sudden fall in the number of people who come forward to donate organs especially kidneys. Due to this the waiting time of the patients to undergo kidney transplants has widened to more than four years.

Statistics of The Australia and New Zealand Organ Donor Registry showed that there were 218 donors in 2004 but it has reduced to 204 in 2005 which is a 7% drop.

Organ donations have been dropping across the Australian continent. In south Australia (49%), New South Wales (14%) and in Queensland (10%) were the respective drops in the number of organ donations. But the good news is that in Western Australia and in Victoria there were an increase in organ donation in the order of 30% and 11% respectively.

Kidney Health Australia reported to the Federal Government that only 4.5 per cent of Australians were eager to donate their kidneys despite various measures taken by the government.

As such the number of patients waiting for their transplant operation is 1660 but due to fall in the donars the waiting time for these patients is sure to increase.

Every year there is an increase of 6% of patients who are in need of a kidney transplant and now they have to wait for more than four years.
