According to a new research, implants to aid hearing loss are going down well with those who use them. Hearing loss affects around a quarter of all adults aged over 60 in the United States. Traditionally there was one option for those with a hearing problem - an acoustic hearing aid. //

Now, however, there's another choice - an implant into the middle ear which directly vibrates the surrounding bones. Researchers in the US have surveyed 100 adults fitted with one of the implants. They find that 70 per cent reported improvement in the quality of life, and most retained their residual hearing. There were, however, a few adverse effect, such as dizziness, device malfunction and infection. On the whole, however, there are clear benefits for those with hearing loss in having an implant.
