Aspirin May Reduce Risk Of Enlarged Prostate

Aspirin, the magic drug present in almost every medicine cabinet, may help in easing out prostate problem, according to a study by Minnesota's Mayo Clinic.//

Aspirin is known to help in the prevention of arthritic inflammations, heart attacks, strokes and several types of cancer along with headaches. The researchers say that now it may help solve some of the urinary problem thought to have been connected with enlarged prostates.

It may help reduce the urinary difficulties by as much as 35 percent. The study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology says that Aspirin may also reduce the risk of contracting the enlarged prostate by 50 percent.

According to Jennifer St. Sauver, the paper's lead author, said, "It (an enlarged prostate) is very, very common among aging men. And, as our population ages, it will just be more common exponentially." Enlarged prostates often cause urinary problems in men.

Dr. Michael Lieber, a Mayo urologist and co-investigator of the study said this was another potential problem, "The typical scenario with benign prostatic hyperplasia is that men start getting up three to five times a night to urinate and their wives ultimately force them to go see a urologist. All this adversely affects men's quality of life."

But researchers said people should not rush out to buy aspirin. "We wouldn't recommend that, partly because this is an epidemiology association study, so we haven't proven causality here," said St. Sauver. "We'd like our finding to be replicated by another group to make sure this wasn't a total fluke."
