Impotent Asian men are reluctant to seek medical treatment to correct the malady, a media report said Tuesday//.

A recent study of 10,900 men found erectile problems affected 50 percent of men over 50 in China, South Korea, Malaysia and Japan, the South China Morning Post said.

But Andrew Yip Wai-chun, honorary consultant at the Well Men Clinic at the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, who released details of the study, said just 36 percent of them seek medical help.

He added that in Hong Kong, up to 15 percent of men who sought treatment for impotence had been coping with the condition for up to 10 years without proper treatment.

Yip said: "It is amazing. We have to do a better job of educating men that erectile dysfunction is a disease. It is not something special. This disease has a very important influence on family life and on the patient's psychology."

The study also found that many men with erectile dysfunction had underlying diseases, with 37 percent having heart disease and 35 percent diabetes.
