As the number of SARS patients in India went up to 10, authorities are not confident about the gravity of SARS. Officals claim that, India has shown a far higher recovery rate than the rest of the world as a result of early detection and superior medical care provided to SARS patients. Even what we call confirmed cases are only confirmed through laboratory tests and they are only between 60 and 65 per cent accurate according to a senior scientist at the National Institute of Communicable Diseases. As social isolation faced by a family in Pune, whose four members were confirmed// to be suffering from SARS continues, it has raised panic among local community. In Gurdaspur, a man admitted as a suspected SARS case, slipped away from a local civil hospital. In Kolkata, about 30 per cent of doctors and para medics at the government Hospital did not report to work. In Pune, four patients who had been confirmed by laboratory tests to be suffering from SARS were discharged from a Hospital Of Infectious Diseases this morning as they had recovered. The De Silva family, however, faces serious problems in the housing society where they are staying. Neighbors have been demanding that they leave the area. The residents insists that these people are carriers of the disease and should not be allowed to stay there. This raises the question, Are people completely aware of symptoms ? or Is the awareness on SARS been rightly spread ?
