Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals has asked the West Bengal government for 10 acres of land in the new township of Rajarhat near here for setting up// a Rs.1.5 billion institute.

The medical institute would provide training as well as conduct research in the medical field, said V. Satyanarayana Reddy, CEO, Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata.

'We are waiting for the government to identify and hand over a site for the project so that we can start work. The project will be completed within a year of getting the land,' Reddy said Wednesday evening after inaugurating an ayurvedic clinic here within the hospital premises.

Apollo Gleneagles Hospital has also initiated expansion work at its existing facility on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass.

Around Rs.500 million would be spent for the expansion. The day care surgery units and alternative medicare units would be housed in the new facility spread over a 72,000 sq ft area, he said.

The group, which operates 32 hospitals, mostly in the southern states, also plans to open hospitals in Mumbai and Bhubaneswar, Reddy said.

Besides, it is in talks with the Bhutan and Myanmar governments for setting up hospitals.

The Rs.10 billion group is eyeing a 35 percent growth in the current fiscal, Reddy said.

The ayurveda clinic inaugurated here Wednesday would be run by the Kerala Ayurvedic Health Spa, a unit of Kerala Vaidyashala (I) Pvt Ltd. The cost of the treatment would start from Rs.500.

'We have put importance on the necessity of integrated approach to medicine and the clinic will help in restoring the natural balanced state of the human body by detoxifying or removing accumulated harmful chemicals,' said V.R. Ramanan, director, medical services, Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals.
