Ants nibble diabetic away to death at Kolkata Hospital

Kolkata:A diabetic patient has died in a Kolkata hospital, after big black ants nibbled away at her left eye.

Hospital sources confirmed that Gouri Rani Chakraborty, whose left eye had a gaping hole on one side when her son Soumen lifted the bandage and cleared a swarm of ants // from the swollen eye Monday morning, died Tuesday.

The nurses on duty at the Sambhunath Pandit Hospital Monday feigned ignorance about the incident and the acting superintendent, A. Adhikary, said that it "was not uncommon for ants to bite a highly diabetic patient".

Later in the day, the government announced that a five-member panel of senior hospital officials would probe the incident.

The hospital authorities had allegedly asked the family of the 55-year-old woman to move her out.

The death of the woman has triggered tension in the hospital premises.
