A study indicated an epilepsy drug would help alcoholics quit drinking. Texas Health Center researchers have found that more than 50% of the alcoholics who took Topiramate, an anti-seizure drug quit or cut back drinking sharply. In comparison with the placebo treatment, those given Topiramate were six times more likely to abstain from drinking. It is believed that the drug acts against the chemicals that provide pleasure from alcohol. While Antabuse, an anti-drinking drug //makes people sick when they drink, researchers believe Antabuse isnt so much a treatment as a punishment for drinking. Researchers believe that Topiramate could well be the right drug for alcoholics. Topiramate already is an approved by the Food and Drug Administration as an anti-seizure drug.
