Researchers have warned doctors that Antibiotics when given to children with diarrhea caused by Escherichia coli bacteria, may put the children at increased risk of developing a serious condition known as "Hemolytic-Uremic Syndrome". The report appears on the website of The New England Journal of Medicine (www.nejm.org). Hemolytic-uremic syndrome, which occurs most commonly in children after a gastrointestinal infection, begins with vomiting and bloody diarrhea and can ultimately result in kidney failure.
