Anti-Quota Stir: Students Take Out Massive Silent Rally

The anti-quota agitation by the medicos further intensified today with students, parents and members of medical faculty taking out a massive silent protest// march in the national capital amid tight security.

The striking medicos under the banner of 'Youth for Equality' were joined by students from the Delhi University, medical colleges around the capital, parents of some agitating students, lawyers and a group of chartered accountants.

Thousands of students were marching from the Maulana Azad Medical College in Central Delhi towards Jantar Mantar near Parliament House, where the rally culminates, the second such street protest in the capital in ten days.

Carrying placards like ‘reserve vs deserve’ and ‘1947: freedom from British, 2006: freedom from caste politics, the march, which stretched about a kilometre, was led by motivational guru Shiv Khera and cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu.

With yesterday's police action on pro-quota students in Patna fresh in their mind, the students are taking no chances and are keeping a tight vigil to ensure that no outsiders enter the rally.

‘We want a peaceful rally and also avoid any confrontation with police and pro-reservation activists,’ Dr Anand, a representative for 'Youth for Equality', said.

The medicos, who were on the seventh day of the agitation, were demanding a complete rollback of the proposed 27.5 per cent quota for OBCs in elite educational institutions and a review of the existing reservation policy.
