As Rajasthan reels under intense heat wave, animals too are affected by scorching temperatures .
Dogs in Jaipur have been suffering heat strokes with as many as 50 canines being treated at veterinary hospitals everyday.
Veterinarians say such extreme heat is not favourable for pets, which don't have any sweat glands to keep cool. The sick dogs have to be put on drips and given ice treatments to bring their body temperature to normal.
"We have been getting a lot of cases of heat stroke in dogs these days. It is happening because of the high temperatures. These dogs don't have sweat glands because of which they are not able to sweat and hence pant a lot.
We have been treating them with ice packs and also putting them on drips besides giving them anti-pyretic medicines when required," said Shashidhar Sharma, a veterinarian.
Pet owners are a worried lot, rushing to hospitals to have their dogs treated, with no thought of the money to be spent.
Satweer Kaur, whose dog 'Googly' has been sick for two days, sits murmuring things into his ear to calm him down.
"He hadn't been eating for two days and was running a fever of 103 degrees. He was also suffering from loose motions and vomiting. We brought him here where he was given four shots and put on the drip. We can see an improvement in his condition," said Kaur.
According to doctors, the solution is to keep the dogs in a cool environment. S. K. Nagyan, another veterinarian said: Keep the dog out of the severe heat and sun. Put him in a cool room that has a fan or cooler.
The number of cases of canine heat stroke has increased by 20-30 percent since the onset of heat wave last week.
