And the Winner Is

British Medical Journal is celebrating 166 years of its publication. To mark this, they are conducting a poll to find out which invention// in modern medicine is the greatest of all.

The journal, launched in 1840, has listed 15 medical breakthroughs and they are inviting the public to have their say in the matter.

The modern miracles include anesthesia, antibiotics, chlorpromazine, computers, DNA, Germ theory, imaging, evidence-based medicine, magic bullets, oral rehydration, the pill, risks of smoking sanitation, vaccines and tissue culture.

BMJ readers compiled the list from more than 100 nominations chosen based on achievements that transformed the lives of millions of people around the world.

Cheerleaders for each medical milestone have been chosen. They include Carl Djerassi co-creator of the Pill as well as a descendant of John Snow, the pioneer of anesthesia.

Says Fiona Godlee, Editor of the British Medical Journal “Any of these milestones would make a deserving winner. They have all made an enormous contribution to society and made a difference to millions of lives. It will be fascinating to see which one will come out on top."

The public is urged to visit the journal’s website and cast their vote.

The winner will be announced at an event in London on January 18.
