Dr. Roman Hasil, a gynecologist from Wanganui hospital is reported to have practiced for two months despite having resigned owing to failed sterilization// procedures.

While talking on this issue, his supervisor Dr Mark Stegmann said that Dr. Hasil was having various problems in his family front besides alcoholism and depression. Hasil was asked to resign after it was found out that he had bungled 6 out of 32 sterilization procedures last year. The general failure rate in such procedures is one out of 200 cases.

It was also reported that he was not able to locate the entrance to the cervix in a woman while analyzing the results of a laproscopic surgery.

Stegnman said that proper procedures were followed by the hospital in association with the Medical council and unions in handling Dr. Hasil’s problems. But there are also allegations against the doctor that he has continuously failed the exams conducted by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists to qualify as a gynecologist.

This scandal has had a negative impact on the reputation of Wanganui Hospital. An US doctor has refused appointment with the hospital. Dr. Stegmann feels that this may result in filling up of vacancies with low quality doctors. The Wanganui District Health Board declined to comment on this issue.
