Chemotherapy is defined as the treatment of cancer using chemical substances as anticancer or chemotherapy drugs to stop or destroy the multiplication of cancer cells. Alimta (pemetrexed) is a new drug recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use with Cisplatin in the treatment of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma. Alimta blocks the enzymes necessary for DNA copying and cell division and the drug is supplemented with Vitamin B12 and Folic acid to minimize the side effects of skin rash and other effects.
