Air Quality Study Leads to Widespread Support for Smoke Free Vote

There is widespread support to the House of Commons vote to impose a ban on smoking in all workplaces, including pubs and bars//.

A team of researchers measured the air quality, using a portable monitor in 64 pubs across the north west of England, in areas where smoking was permitted. The study revealed that the quality of air was very poor, with a very high particles rate. This, when inhaled, would cause harm to the health.

Dr Richard Edwards, who conducted the research at the University of Manchester, said "We found very poor air quality in these pubs. This research confirms that workers and customers in pubs are heavily exposed to pollution from passive smoking, particularly in pubs in more deprived areas. The research also shows that making workplaces smoke free will help tackle the huge burden of ill health caused by smoking, particularly among deprived populations who tend to smoke more."
