After Bringing Cheer Rains Choke Delhi's Roads

While generous rainfall over the weekend brought cheer to the capital with most people indulging in outdoor activities, a heavy downpour Monday morning wasn't greeted with much joy .

As the city received 104.7 mm of rain in just four days, much more than the usual 55 mm it receives in the month of June, the city faced waterlogging problems.

"The weekend was just fantastic and I and my family went to India Gate to simply enjoy the weather out in the open. However, this morning I got terribly late for work thanks to the traffic jam and the water logging on the roads," said Pravin Misra, who works with an advertising firm.

"The roads of Mukherjee Nagar in north Delhi get choked after an hour of rain. And it has been raining for the past four days. We had to fold up our jeans till the knee level to walk across the road. A couple of cars were stranded but that is a normal sight during the rains," said Nazvi Ahmed.

The officials at the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the city could get some more rain during the course of the day. "The skies will remain partly cloudy throughout the day with rain or thundershowers late afternoon. The maximum temperature will hover around 32 degree Celsius," said an IMD official.

The minimum temperature was six degrees below normal at 22 degrees. The officials have forecast pleasant weather till Wednesday.

While the city dwellers are relieved from the scorching sun, the dread of the water choked roads and the unbearable stink due to overflowing drains have become a sore point.

The air conditioned Metro that brought relief during sweltering summer days has again come to the rescue of Delhiites. "Thanks to the Metro I am saved from the endless wait on the roads during traffic jams especially during the rains," said Arihant Misra, a bank employee.
