Africa Requires $760 Mln To Tackle Bird Flu

The African union and aid organisations said on Wednesday, that, Africa needs $760 million to fight bird flu over the next three years. // This is about three times as much as the $1.9 billion pledge made by their donors, in January.

The pledge, in Beijing, made at a donors conference did not expect bird flu to break out in Africa, But the virus has been reported in eight African countries since February, and this increased the requirement for funds significantly.

Most of funds will be needed to increase the surveillance and response of health systems in Africa and take care of the compensation to farmers whose poultry is affected.According to a study the countries in most need of the money will be South Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia .
