Action Plan Against Drug Deaths Launched

The Scottish Executive has announced that over 120,000 will be provided until 2008 towards expanding a First Aid Project. //The number of drug related deaths are sought to be brought down through training with regard to first aid techniques and raising the awareness regarding important issues connected to an overdose. There has been a 12% increase in drug related deaths in 2004 when compared to 2003, at 356, with Greater Glasgow alone accounting for 120 deaths.

The action plan has been launched by Hugh Henry, the Deputy Justice Minister in Glasgow. The training is provided by the Scottish Drugs Forum, while the Executive will provide the required funds. A report has been commissioned by the Minister into the drug problems faced by Scotland after 382 users died in 2002. Most people appear reluctant to contact emergency services even after a dangerous overdose of drugs. The long-term approach of the Executive has come under criticism from the Scottish Conservatives.
