Access Economics Report: Alarming Rise in Dementia

Australia will need to double up to take stock of the growing numbers of people with dementia, which is expected to rise to alarming proportions, according to The Access// Economics report, Asia Pacific Region.

The report commissioned by Alzheimer's Australia, forecasts that the Asia Pacific region may see a rise in the condition from 13.7 million to 64.6 million. By 2050 the region will have to contend with nearly 19.7 million cases, from the 4.3 million cases, presently.

Access Economics researcher, Lynne Pezzullo, said, "Australia, like all the countries in the region, is at the beginning of a dementia epidemic. The cost of dementia will increase, and we need therefore to look at strategies to effectively redress the epidemic."
